Augmentation, Lift, and Reduction
Body image is an important part of feeling good, desirable and normal. Having a cosmetic breast procedure can greatly improve your self-esteem. It can make you feel more comfortable and self-confident both in and out of clothing. If you have excessively large breasts, you can also physically benefit from a breast reduction.
Breast enhancement or augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures in the United States today. This procedure can dramatically improve the appearance of a woman’s breasts. The enhancement procedure is used to enlarge small breasts, underdeveloped breasts, or breasts that have decreased in size after a woman has had children as well as help to equalize the size of the breasts. For many women, the size, shape, or contour of her breasts does not fit her self-image.
A procedure called a breast lift or mastopexy is designed to elevate and reshape the breast providing a more youthful appearance. A breast lift may be performed in conjunction with a breast augmentation, if necessary.
For others, large, sagging or uneven breasts are the source of her dissatisfaction. Some experience pain from the sheer weight of their breasts, while others find their physical activities restricted or have difficulty finding clothes to fit them properly. For these women, a breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty may be the solution.
Is breast surgery for you?
During your consultation with Dr. Morris, he will discuss your goals and expectations of the surgery. Dr, Morris will assess the nature of your breasts, your expectations, and explain the probable outcome of your procedure.
You will be shown many before and after photographs of patients having similar procedures, and Dr. Morris will explain the treatment you can expect to receive.
What is recovery from breast surgery like?
Rest is recommended for the first day. For the first few days following any breast surgery, you will wear a special post-surgical bra. Most discomfort associated with breast surgery can be controlled with oral medication prescribed by Dr. Morris. Antibiotics will also be prescribed. Most women experience some degree of swelling, bruising and tenderness. These symptoms should subside in a short time. The sutures used are absorbable, and most often never need removal. Dr. Morris will advise you on a proper schedule for returning to your normal activities. Most patients are back to work within a few days. Recovery may take a little longer depending on your particular line of work.
Following your cosmetic breast surgery, you will enjoy a new, more pleasing shape, with more comfortable breasts that are in better proportion to your physique.
The Procedures - Overview
Breast augmentation, breast lift and breast reduction are performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. This means you go home the same day.
Breast augmentation usually takes about an hour. Dr. Morris makes an incision under the lower portion of the breast near the chest wall – in contrast to other techniques - he finds that this provides the most control and precision during the procedure.
A breast lift may take two hours depending on the complexity. In addition to the incision under the breast, other incisions are necessary. These may be around the areola (the colored area around the nipple), and from the bottom of the areola to the incision under the breast. Understandably, the additional scars are a concern of every patient before the surgery; however, virtually all patients afterward agree that the benefits of the procedure far outweigh the typically modest scars.
A breast reduction can take from two to three hours, depending on its complexity. Incisions are similar to those of the breast lift. When breasts are extremely large, the nipple may be completely detached and relocated after excess tissue is removed. Most patients describe relief of their symptoms such as neck and back pain, etc., even as they walk out of the hospital. A frequent comment our patients make is, “I wish I had done this years ago!”
